I Peter Study - Week 4

Dear Pilgrims,

We are moving into our fourth week of the I Peter study. Below are the scheduled daily readings beginning Sunday, October 5 with brief commentary that links each reading with the central reading of I Peter 3: 8 - 4:7. If you have any questions about our study or the daily readings, please phone me at the church office, 629-2633.

Saturday October 4th Daily Reading

Ephesians 6
The issue of slaves/master is dealt with by Paul in Ephesians 6:5-9, when he turns on its head the relationship between the two. Paul puts the burden of right behavior on the master, which would have been unheard of in the Roman Empire . The coming of Jesus caused a radical rethinking of relationships as He taught equality for all people.

Spaghetti Dinner

Pilgrim's Spaghetti Dinners are back! Come out for some food and fellowship on Saturday October 4th, 4:00pm-6:30pm

Friday's Update for October 3rd

Dear Pilgrims,

This Sunday we celebrate the Lord's love as we gather at His table for a time of communion. We continue in our series from 1 Peter with 1 Peter 3: 8 - 16 as our text. My message is titled, "Why We Do What We Do". Remember to bring your Bible this week.

Our first spaghetti dinner for the fall is this Saturday, 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. Invite your friends for an all-you-can-eat tasty meal.

We had a great first meeting for our men's breakfast. 15 guys gathered at 6:30 a.m. this past Thursday and enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Bob Forst. We also shared life together and looked at a Scripture passage. We'll be meeting again this month and will keep you posted as to the date.

Tickets are on sale for the bar-be-que sponsored by our Missions ministry to help fund the November trip to Biloxi . You may purchase tickets in the office or on Sunday. The bar-b-que is scheduled for Saturday, October 11.

If you would like to help with the 11:00 a.m. coffee hour, your assistance would be appreciated. Phone the church office at 629-2633, see Joyce Rich or Carol Aitchison.

We are looking for lots of volunteers to lend a hand at our annual fall pumpkin fest on Saturday, October 25, 10:00 - 1:00. A sign up sheet will be in Sunday's bulletin. We anticipate about 150 kids.

Please remember Doc Goss who is hospitalized. Paul Burgwardt would appreciate your prayers as he recuperates from knee surgery, and Bob Forst will be having surgery next week.

As the economy continues on its rollercoaster, know that we have a God who is eternally faithful, steady and true, and we can rely upon Him always.

See you Sunday.

In His Grace,

Pastor Matthew Neumann

Friday October 3rd Daily Reading

Ephesians 5
Similar to the words of Peter regarding following Christ’s example of love and walking in His steps, Paul admonishes us to live a life filled with honesty and integrity. Paul also addresses the husband/wife relationship. Love and respect are essential to a healthy marriage, both spiritually and emotionally.

Thursday October 2nd Daily Reading

Genesis 2
Genesis 2 tells the story of God creating Adam and Eve. Peter writes in 3:1-7 of the relationship between husband and wife. He emphasizes mutual love, respect and honor. When Peter writes of the wife being ‘weaker’ than the husband he is referring to physical strength, not strength of emotion, character or faith.

Wednesday October 1st Daily Reading

Matthew 26
This passage in Matthew’s Gospel details some of Jesus sufferings Peter addresses in his writings. We observe Jesus submitting to the authorities, even when they were driven by evil. Also, note the role of Peter in Matthew 26. He is one of the three who accompanies Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (v. 36). Included in this reading is the account of Peter denying Christ three times.

Tuesday's Update for September 30

Dear Pilgrims,

This week we move along in our readings that relate to the 1 Peter Scripture from Sunday. Each morning at 6:00 a.m. each day's reading is posted on our website pilgrimonline.org.

Please remember in prayer Jerry Barker who is having a procedure this week, and Paul Burgwardt as he recuperates from knee surgery. Also, Jill Mitchell has requested prayer for her brother Scott Hamlin, who is waiting for results from a biopsy.

All men are invited to a breakfast at church this Thursday morning, 6:30 a.m. in the youth room. We'll conclude at 7:30 a.m. for all who need to be at work by 8:00 a.m.

May the peace and love of Christ guard your heart and mind this day.

In His Service,

Pastor Matthew Neumann

Tuesday September 30th Suggested Bible Reading

Isaiah 53
I Peter 2:21 – 25 draws imagery and language from Isaiah 53 – one of the Suffering Servant prophecies given by Isaiah 700 years prior to Jesus. Jesus sufferings were the fulfillment of Old Testament Scriptures as He died for our sins.

Monday September 29th Suggested Reading

Romans 13
In this chapter we have the Apostle Paul’s view of obedience to the government and paying taxes. An interesting point to ponder is this: did Peter and Paul always obey the government, even when they were told not to preach the Gospel? How do we square their actions with what is written in Romans 13:1-7 and I Peter 2: 13-17?

Sunday September 28th Suggested Reading

I Peter 2:11 – 3:7
In this third weekly reading from I Peter, which will serve as the basis for Sunday’s message, Peter emphasizes living with Christian integrity and authenticity before others. I Peter 2:21 – “Follow in His Steps,” became the title of a best selling book dealing with living a faithful Christian life through helping others in Christ’s Name. Peter also deals with the sticky issues of obedience to government, slaves behavior toward masters, and mutuality in relationships between husband and wife. These passages may cause some important questions to be raised.
